Road rash and flesh wounds can be prevented by wearing leather motorcycle chaps. Sizing can vary by manufacturer, so it is important to know your measurements. To properly size motorcycle chaps you need a pair of jeans, a tape measure, and a notepad.
Start by putting on a pair of jeans that you would normally wear for riding, as leather motorcycle chaps are meant to be worn on top of jeans. Next, measure your waist, your thigh at its largest point, and your inseam (all in inches). Note these measurements in your notepad and compare your numbers to the numbers listed by the manufacturer to determine which size chaps are best for your body.
When I first started riding, I used to wear leather pants and leather jackets. I found that whenever I got to my destination, the pants that had kept me warm and protected on the road, quickly overheated and stuck to my skin off the bike. A fellow biker suggested I try motorcycle chaps as an alternative. When he first said the word chaps I immediately thought of the Christina Aguilera video where she parades around a boxing ring in chaps. I gave my friend an inquisitive look and after he finished laughing at me for listening to pop music he explained what motorcycle chaps are.
A quality pair of motorcycle chaps will protect you from road rash just as well as a pair of leather riding pants. The difference being that motorcycle chaps fit over your pants and can be removed when you get to your destination. When picking out a pair of chaps you just have to be careful to leave enough room for your pants, particularly around the thighs. Now, I wear my motorcycle chaps whenever I ride, and when I get to my destination I just take them off and throw them in my pack. No more overheating for this girl!
Before I met my boyfriend the only thing that I knew about motorcycles was what womens motorcycle chaps I was going to wear for the ride-I had no idea what a starter or any other of the central components of the vehicle were. He is a huge Harley enthusiast and is always working on his motorcycles. He has two of them; one vintage Harley and a newer Kawasaki. The other day we were headed out for an afternoon ride and the stupid Harley wouldn’t start.
I thought maybe the motorcycle was out of gas or that the battery was dead. But my boyfriend told me that the tank was full and the battery was good. He said it was a problem with the starter. We took the bike over to his friend’s house. This guy was a genius with bike starters and had it fixed in no time.
It goes without saying that the most critical piece of motorcycle safety gear is the helmet. After you’ve found effective protection for your head, however, it’s time to think about the rest of your body. Leather motorcycle chaps are practical as well as stylish, and they can save your frame from experiencing some serious wear and tear following a spill.
The best chaps blend durability with comfort. Riding in stiff chaps can cause discomfort; no one wants to suffer from chap-induced chafing. Bear in mind that leather chaps are made to last longer than any other specific type. Like any leather garment, chaps require a certain level of basic maintenance and upkeep. By cleaning your chaps on occasion, you can vastly improve their usefulness.
