The first motorcycle helmet was reported to have been introduced in 1953. Safety agencies throughout the years have lobbied for mandatory helmet laws. In 1961 the world’s first mandatory motorcycle helmet law was introduced. After that, safety agencies really got into the act. In 1966 the American National Safety Standard for Motorcycle Helmets was introduced, requiring performance standards for helmets that manufacturers were obligated to meet. Every helmet has to have a DOT-approved sticker inside.
There are different styles of helmets to choose from. Full-face helmets cover the entire head. Many full-face helmets have vents to increase airflow to the rider. Off-road helmets have an elongated chin and visor portions, a chin bar, and partially open face to give the rider extra protection while wearing goggles. Modular helmets are a hybrid of a full-face and open-face helmet and are used for street bikes. Open-face helmets cover the ears, cheeks, and back of the head. Outlaw motorcycle helmets are an American brand, they are half helmets. They have a lighter feel to them as well. Whatever helmet you choose, make sure that is DOT-approved.
